Issue No 1 May 2006

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

(Chinese proverb)

Welcome to the first edition of our innovative electronic newsletter - yet another example of Bishops moving with the times - the first step in our "journey of a thousand miles", a journey into the world of e-communication. Part of the process in producing BishopsBlue is understanding what role it can play for you - our focus is to keep it relevant, strike a chord with you and allow you to see Bishops from a new perspective. The intention is not to duplicate material that is published in the quarterly school magazine or on the Bishops website, but to share with you some of the highlights that make this the school that it is.

We are all only too acutely aware of just what a busy place Bishops is, and this is highlighted by many things that have happened of late, but none more so than the many activities in which Bishops boys, staff and parents were involved during the April holidays. For example, more than 150 College boys, staff and parents travelled to various parts of the world and in South Africa to represent Bishops in the cultural and sporting arenas, and many more were engaged in other cultural and sporting events in their personal capacities (e.g. the inter-provincial surf lifesaving competition in Port Elizabeth).

Selecting the material for this issue has been a stimulating and pleasing challenge, and we trust that we have done justice to those who put so much into the experiences and achievements that we have highlighted. The Choir and Brass Band Tour to Russia has been a cultural tour de force and has generated a great deal of excitement and energy; as has the Art and Cultural Tour to Europe, the Hockey Tour to Malaysia and Singapore, and our participation in the World Debating and Public Speaking Competition in the USA. The consistently impressive performances of Bishops boys have secured Bishops the honour of hosting this prestigious event in 2007 - a real coup! Read on ...

BishopsBlue is being sent out to all members of the Bishops family for whom we have an e-mail address; so if you know of someone who might like to receive it, please invite them via the "subscribe" facility at the bottom of the links on the left of this page. We plan to send BishopsBlue quarterly, but judging by the interest it has already attracted, it will probably become a more frequent value-adding service from Bishops.

Bishops Choir Tour
Choir & Brass Band Tour to Russia

The political intrigue of the Moscow Kremlin. The vast, icy reaches of a land ravaged by revolution and war. The glittering palaces of St Petersburg. And a culture and history that is perhaps the world's most complex, rich and exciting ...

... and much of this was experienced and enjoyed by the 53 members of the choir and brass band and their teachers when they embarked on this journey of a lifetime in the April holidays. One of the group, organ scholar John Woodland, has captured it all beautifully.

Bishops Cultural Tour

Art & Cultural Tour to Europe

A tour party consisting 23 Bishops boys and Peter Hyslop and 14 Springfield girls and their teachers, Margie Corlett and Julian Cameron, traveled to Rome (stopping over in Paris for a connecting flight), and then toured extensively in Italy, starting with Rome, moving on to Venice, then Florence (via Verona) and finally back to Rome (via Assisi). The party then flew from Rome to Paris on Palm Sunday (09 April), and spent three nights there. It was an extraordinarily exciting tour, with many memorable experiences. [Read more]

Bishops Debating
World Debating and Public Speaking Competition

Because of our fantastic achievements at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Salt Lake City (2004) and Cyprus (2005), Bishops was once again offered the opportunity to send a team to participate in this competition in the United States at the very exclusive Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. This was (and is!) an incredible opportunity for Bishops and for the Debating Society, so, on 16 March, Mubeen Goolam (Gray House, Gr. 12), Christopher Lester (Birt House, Gr. 10) and Zonke Mputolo (LEAP School, Gr. 11), along with Shirley Lamb and Rob Moolman,  left to represent Bishops and the Western Cape.
